Pair Sussex Slipware Pottery Floral Pilgrim Flasks

About the Item

A very stylish and hand-crafted matched pair slipware pottery pilgrim flasks decorated with floral designs possibly originating from Sussex, England and dating to the 19th century. The lightly potted flasks made from red terracotta earthenware are of round form with a raised and narrow shaped top with a screw element to the inside. Both flasks are decorated to both sides and both have the main front pattern set within a leaf and stipple border, one decorated with flower heads and the other with a stylized scroll floral design. Both have similar contrasting leaf patterns applied to the backs. The flasks have four thick loop strap eyes applied to the sides and the bodies are decorated in tones of yellow, green and black against a dirty brown colored ground with elements of the red clay showing through in places. The flasks are typically not marked. Provenance: Acquired from the UK Art Market. In good condition with wear associated with age and use. One of the flasks has a repair to one of the strap loops at the back and would be easily restored if needed.
