Studio Pottery Slipware Fish Decorated Terracotta Dish
About the Item
A stylish British studio pottery dish decorated with a slipware fish design in the manner of Winchcombe and signed Gilbert dating from the 20th century. The oval shaped dish narrows to one end and is heavily hand made from thick terracotta clay with a rounded body and wide flat top rim. The inner dish is decorated in dark brown tenmoku glazes with a swimming fish hand applied in yellow slipware glazes. The rest of the piece has been left unglazed and the color of the terracotta appears to have mellowed with age. The dish has an incised signature mark reading Gilbert to the base.
Provenance: Acquired from the UK Art Market.
In good condition with light wear from age and use and with a few tiny rim nibbles which do not detract.
