Sussex Slipware Pottery Floral Pilgrim Flask & Cover
About the Item
A very stylish and hand crafted slipware pottery pilgrim flask decorated with floral designs probably originating from Sussex, England and dating to the 19th century. The lightly potted flask made from red terracotta earthenware is of large round form with a raised and narrow shaped top, unusually with its original screw in pottery cover. The flask has four molded mask strap eyes applied to the sides and the body is decorated in colored slips in yellow, green, black and terracotta forming panels decorated with flower heads with stylized fruiting vines and with a garland design of leaves applied around the edge with strapwork patterning around the top. The whole has been decorated in natural glazes with an unpatterning back and the flask is typically not marked.
Provenance: Acquired from the UK Art Market.
In good condition with wear associated with age and use. A small loss to one of mask strap eyes which would be relatively easy to restore if needed.
