A Rut Bryk Karjalainen Talo 'Karelian House' Blue Ceramic Wall Plaque, 1950s
About the Item
An outstanding piece of art by one of the leading names of the mid-century Finnish ceramic scene. This large and colorful wall plaque made by Rut Bryk (1916-1999) called the "Karjalainen talo" or Carelian house, is one of the pieces that belongs to a carelian town series designed by Bryk. Bryk was never fond of rules, and never liked to explain her works. However, the loss of Karelia to the Soviet Union in the 1940s marked the loss of a summer paradise to Bryk, as she spent a lot of summers in Karelia as a child. This house, far from perfect, with all of its windows being unique may have also been Bryk's way of reminiscing on her giving up on her dream of becoming an architect.
In addition to the standard "bryk" signing, the piece comes with a certificate from 1966, that states it to be an original piece by Rut Bryk made for the Finnish company `Wärtsilä yhtymä O/Y`.
Rut Bryk (1916–1999) was a pioneering Finnish ceramic artist known for her intricate, colourful, and often architectural tile works. Blending elements of modernism, folk art, and storytelling, her pieces ranged from delicate, nature-inspired motifs to large-scale geometric compositions.
Originally trained as a graphic artist, Bryk transitioned into ceramics in the 1940s, working at Arabia, Finland’s renowned ceramics manufacturer. Over the decades, she developed a distinctive style, experimenting with textures, glazing techniques, and sculptural forms. Her later works, particularly large ceramic reliefs, became key features in public spaces, showcasing her ability to merge art and architecture.
Bryk was also part of Finland’s mid-century design movement, alongside her husband, designer Tapio Wirkkala. Although Bryk herself was very shy, and rarely gave any insight into her works, let alone interviews or pictures, her work continues to be celebrated for its timeless beauty, meticulous craftsmanship, and innovative approach to ceramics.
Rut Bryk´s works can be found in museums around the world, including the Design Museum in Helsinki, Danish Museum of Art and Design in Copenhagen and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
