About the Item

This is the 1960s eggshell glazed ceramic vase in white by Gunnar Nylund for Rörstrand. It comes in a female elegant form and sober white eggshell glazed silky matte surface. The vase's balustraded shape ends upwards with a tall tapering neck. The bottom is marked with an R for Rörstrand and Sweden surrounded by three crowns. Also the letters GN, Gunnar Nylund's initials an and ARA for model designation. ____________________ Gunnar Nylund, Swedish ceramicist and designer, is known for his beautiful vases and bowls. He also made a lots of figurines in the form of animals. He was born in Paris 1st of May 1904, the son of the sculptor Felix Nylund and his wife, the artist Fernanda Jacobsen. Gunnar first trains as an architect but gradually slips more and more into the design of ceramic objects. Directly after his architecture education, he practices at Grankulla Lerkärlsfabrik in Finland. In 1924 he travels on to Denmark where he is employed by Bing & Gröndahl. There he does not feel free in his creation and in 1928 he decides to start his own workshop in Denmark - Saxbo Stentöj. In 1931, after an appreciated exhibition, Gunnar ends up at Rörstrand in Lidköping and in time becomes one of the foremost of the company's artists. Gunnar leaves Rörstrand in 1959 and returns to Denmark where he works as artistic director at Nymölle Keramikfabrik. During the 1960s and 70s, he also carried out some assignments for Upsala Ekeby. In 1990-1991 he made a short stay at Jie Grantofta. Gunnar Nylund died on 1 July 1997.
