About

Male figure with pointed hat, kneeling on his left leg and balancing cactus pots, holding one on his left shoulder, another between it and his head, one on his right thigh, two more pots standing on the ground in front of him. On a thin, rectangular base plate. Manufactory: 'Wiener Werkstätte' /- 'Vienna Workshop' Dating: made circa 1927 Material: ceramics / red earthenware, hand-painted, glossy finish Design: Gudrun BAUDISCH (1907 - 1982) Austrian ceramist, admitted to the Austrian federal school for building and applied arts in Graz in 1922, where she worked for a year in Wilhelm Gösser's sculpture class. From 1923 she was trained for three years in Hans Adametz's ceramics class. In 1926 she began her career as a trainee in the design department of the Wiener Werkstätte, where she worked as a designer until 1930. She exerted great influence with her almost expressive ornamentalism, playful heads and the best craftsmanship, and designed 166 models for the WW. Model 367 was created around 1927. WW - Wiener Werkstätte / Vienna Workshop: The 'Wiener Werkstätte GmbH' was a production association of visual artists. Founding members in 1903 were Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser and the industrialist Fritz Waerndorfer, who made a name for himself as an art patron. On September 2, 1905, WW signed Carl Otto Czeschka as another designer. The role model was the British 'Arts and Crafts Movement'. The aim of the workshop was to renew the concept of art in the field of arts and crafts. Here she worked with the Vienna Secession and the Vienna School of Applied Arts. Everyday objects as well as jewelry and furniture were produced.Ceramics were an integral part of the product range of WW, which were originally produced outside in cooperation or taken over on commission. With the establishment of the in-house artist workshops in 1917, a renewal took place: The colorful expressiveness and free artistic expression of the ceramics created there differed significantly from the purism of the previous production.
