Wilhelm Kage, "Farsta" Different faces Bowl, the Gustavsberg, Sweden, 1946
About the Item
Wilhelm Kage, "Farsta" Bowl with a line pattern that has a different look inside and out. The Gustavsberg Manufactory, Sweden 1946 Impressed "Farsta" "Gustavsberg G (hand) Studio" Incised "P", "KÅGE
The entire ochre-colored base is coated with a red brown glaze, and the inside is covered with a starch blue glaze with a shiny skin.
It is thought that the matt glaze was applied to the entire piece first, fired, and then the lees blue glaze was applied only to the inside and fired again, thus creating this different view of the inside and outside.
This type of work with different glazes on the inside and outside is very rare, perhaps because it takes a long time to produce, or perhaps because it is difficult to produce itself.
The starch-blue glaze flows down from the mouth rim to the outside in some places, which is a nice view. In Kage's work, Berndt Friberg made the bowl on the potter's wheel in the shape of a regular circle, and then distorted it into an oval shape, probably by hand-twisting it by Kage himself.
The inner lees blue glaze is of the type with an underglaze black glaze, a dark, deep color, creating a tight, dark blue world.
The flow of the glaze is very fine, and the furrows flowing into the bottom are complex, almost like watching blue lava flowing down.
The outer surface of the vessel was originally carved with a line pattern using a comb, and it seems that a brush was used to apply the Red brown glaze while turning the potter's wheel on top of it.
Every part of the vessel shows meticulous and careful work, with no corners left unturned. It is assumed that the production time spent on this small vessel was considerable.
It is in very good condition.
The vessel has been examined by an expert by UV light and visual inspection to ensure that there are no repairs and that it is not twice kiln fired.
