Wilhelm Kage, "Farsta" Pattern Carved Large Bowl, the Gustavsberg, Sweden, 1948

About the Item

Wilhelm Kage, "Farsta" Large yellow mat glazed footed bowl with snake, bird, and sun design, The Gustavsberg Manufactory, Sweden 1948 Impressed "Gustavsberg G (hand) Studio" Incised "R", "KÅGE This is a large yellow mat glazed footed bowl with snake, bird, and sun design by Wilhelm Kåge, a master potter at the Gustavsberg Porcelain manufactory in Sweden. A very large footed bowl is decorated with sun-like circles in the center of a bird and a snake. In the center of the bowl is a circle like the sun, with lines carved in a radial pattern from the sun. The back of the bowl is carved with four high legs and a concentric circle of finely scraped-off lines. These high legs were originally made as columns of this height, and only the four legs were carved away to maintain the sturdiness and stability of the vessel. It is as if we are looking at a myth found in ancient ruins in South America, and its presence is overwhelming. The pattern was not added to the clay afterwards, but was carved out like a wood carving, giving the lines of the pattern a vigorous strength. The yang-engraving works are very intricate and are representative of Kage's works exhibited at exhibitions, and are found only at the highest level of Kage's works. The piece comes with a traditional Japanese ceramic wooden box. The vessel has been examined by an expert by UV light and visual inspection to ensure that there are no repairs and that it is not twice kiln fired.
