Wilhelm Kage, "Farsta" Yellow Vase, the Gustavsberg Manufactory, Sweden, 1958

About the Item

Wilhelm Kage, "Farsta" yellow mat glazed vase with geometric design, The Gustavsberg Manufactory, Sweden 1958 Impressed "Farsta" Five times to feet, "Gustavsberg G (hand) Studio" Incised "ö", "KÅGE This is a footed vase by Wilhelm Kåge, a master potter at the Gustavsberg Porcelain manufactory in Sweden. The body is a cylindrical cylinder with a slightly widened mouth rim and five high feet on the base. The entire body is coated with a brick red brown glaze, over which a yellow matte glaze is applied, and subsequently the glaze is scraped with sandpaper to create this rusty, intricate look. Kage's matte-glazed pieces were glazed and sandpapered many times until he was satisfied with the look he achieved. The body has five rectangular windows arranged vertically in regular rows of five. The rectangular windows are decorated vertically with fine scratched lines and appear to have been colored with white glaze. The flat part of the mouth rim is carved with a radial pattern of fine scratched-off lines, and painted indigo and line patterns are arranged in concentric circles, with no detail left out. A huge amount of time and effort went into the completion of each vessel, and the unmistakable presence seems to be the result of the long production time. The mouth rim has some dents from the spatula marks made during the production process, but the condition is very good. The vessel has been examined by an expert by UV light and visual inspection to ensure that there are no repairs and that it is not twice kiln fired.
