Blue and White Delft Charger Hand Painted English Delftware 18th Century C. 1765

About the Item

This beautiful blue and white Delftware charger features a vibrant garden scene that is hand-painted in just three shades of cobalt blue. In the central space, flowers emerge from rockwork, and a small butterfly hovers above. The butterfly, surrounded by flowers, symbolizes love, as butterflies are drawn to flowers. Along the border of the charger are five panels adorned with simple floral designs. The panels are separated by cross-hatching, commonly referred to as "diamonds. Dimensions: 14" in diameter x 1.5" height Condition: Excellent: with very small edge frits invisibly restored Price: $880 Background of English Delft: The art of making Delft began in England in the Mid-1500s. An English delftware jug has been found in East Malling, Kent, with a silver mount hallmarked 1550, which is presumed to be the earliest English delftware manufacture date. John Stow's Survey of London (1598) records the arrival in 1567 of two Antwerp potters, Jasper Andries and Jacob Jansen, in Norwich, where they made "Gally Paving Tiles and vessels for Apothecaries and others..." The production of Delft reached its high point in the mid-1700s. After that, creamware pottery began to replace Delft as the useful pottery of the English middle class.
