About the Item

A fine 18th c Dutch Polychrome painted delft charger, decorated with vibrantly colored stylized tulips and flowers painted in manganese, green, yellow and blue. The sloped rim is painted with flowers and leaves. The center of the dished charger is painted with a scene of flowers and bulbs, with foliage, and hanging petals and floral buds. The back has a small foot rim with a suspension hole for hanging. Delftware began as a Dutch imitation of Chinese famille decorated porcelain and Japanese Imari. Original delftware came out of potteries in Delft Holland, in the 1600's through the 1700's. After a civil war in China interrupted porcelain exports, delftware flourished as a substitute. Antique polychrome is rarer than blue and white because it was more expensive to make, and therefore less were produced.
