Italian Maiolica Drug Jar Albarello

About the Item

An impressive 17th century polychrome decorated drug jar or 'Albarello'. The Albarello is of a typical waisted shape, and is decorated profusely in polychrome with a wonderful portrait of a man wearing a 'Dantesque' cap contained within an elongated oval medallion. The body of the jar is decorated with stylized opium poppy flowers and leaves painted in polychrome over a cobalt blue ground with white scrolls. Condition is excellent antique. There is a chip on the top lip that was glazed over before firing. There are scattered imperfections in the glaze from the firing process. One interior firing crack that does not extend to the exterior. No breaks or repairs. Otherwise condition is commensurate with age and usage. This Albarello is related to a number of jars associated with the Venetian Renaissance master potter Domenico Veneziano (fl. circa 1560-1580), and his workshop. They are generally of a larger size with polychrome decoration of flowers and scrolls, loosely painted in reserve on a cobalt blue ground with white scrolls, and with elongated oval medallions containing portrait busts.
