Polychrome plaque with oriental floral decoration Delft, 1740-1760

About the Item

Polychrome plaque with oriental floral decoration Delft, 1740-1760 The square, convex plaque has indented corners and a raised rim and is painted in polychrome with an oriental floral landscape. A fence is set on a rocky ground with vegetation. On the left, a tree sprouts from a rock and in the centre and on the right, plants and flowers grow behind tied-together reed hedges. Two birds are perched in the tree. The sky is filled with a dragon, a bird and various butterflies and dragonflies. The entire scene is framed by two blue lines. The border is painted with a concatenated leafy vine on a yellow fond. Dimensions: length 24,5 cm / 9.64 in., width 24,5 cm / 9.64 in., height 2,5 cm / 0.98 in. The decor and colours on the plaque are a Delft adaptation of decorations on Japanese Kakiemon porcelain. This sparsely decorated and finely painted porcelain was imported into Europe on a limited scale and was a popular collector's item. However, demand far outstripped supply, prompting the Delft potters, as well as ceramics companies in other countries, to market copies and their own variants. In Delft, these Kakiemon decors were manufactured between 1690 and 1760. The plaque has glaze damage in the yellow decorated rim.
