Delft Polychrome plaque with an allegorical depiction 1730-1750

About the Item

Polychrome plaque with an allegorical depiction. Delft, 1730-1750 The lozenge-shaped plaque has a raised, accolade-shaped rim interrupted at the top by a large shell and at the bottom by a smaller shell. A shell is also modelled on both sides. The plaque is painted in polychrome with an allegorical depiction of a landscape containing a woman with harp and three children near a grave or monument. One of the children sits on a pile of books. In the background, the winged horse Pegasus stands on a hill or bush. The raised rim is painted with two types of floral motifs: concatenated leaves on a brown-red ground and a leaf with yellow ribbon, separated by green leaves. The shells are accentuated in light brownish-red. Below the top shell are two suspension holes. Dimensions: length 31,2 cm / 12.28 in., width 28 cm / 11.02 in. This plaque is well preserved, especially considering its age of almost 300 years! With some minor glaze damage to the rim, typical of Delftware.
