19th Century Dessert Service for 12 with Polychrome Enamel Exotic Birds

About the Item

This "Japonesque" dessert service incorporates many decorative elements of both period and style. The shaped rims of the white plates are highlighted with gold trim and gadroon edges and decorated in a lovely combination of colors, making them both casual and cheerful. Whimsical birds are perched on variously placed branches making the focal point a bit off center. The 12 plates are accompanied by the large oval footed centerbowl which doubles as a serving piece or can be used as a centerpiece. It is embellished with leaf-shaped handles, trimmed in gold.This is an early set, circa 1850s but has a modern charm and versatile palette. The plates are 9" in diameter.
