19th Century Staffordshire Rose Pompadour Botanical Dessert Service

About

19th century hand painted, custom made pink, ‘Rose Pompadour’ dessert service from R.G. Scrivener & Co. England., 21 pieces total. No manufacturer's name but we would guess that this service was made by Davenport. Each piece has been skilfully hand painted with a unique botanical specimen. The rim of the plates is decorated with gold beading in a trellis decoration, the trellis is further enhanced by white jewels that are "inset" between the diamonds. The 3 larger compotes also have this lovely decoration on the base rim. Each piece monogrammed "JW," Large compete says at the base:, "Presented to the Rev John Watson. M.A. by the Teachers of St. John Hanley May 1882." The St. John's school was founded in Hanley in 1822, Reverend Watson was presumably the head of the school, or its minster, or both. Scrivener's was located in Shelton, England, midway between Stoke-on-Trent and Hanley in the heart of 19th century England's ceramic industry. They were in business from 1870-1883. Rose Pompadour is an intense pink color invented by Sevres in 1757 and named for the Sevres supporter and mistress of Louis XV Madame de Pompadour.
