About the Item

A charming and rare set of four porcelain plates, created by Piero Fornasetti in the 1950s, specially commissioned by Fiat to celebrate the culinary and cultural traditions of Turin. Each plate features Fornasetti's unmistakable blend of wit, precision, and visual storytelling, rendered through lithographic decoration and delicate hand painting. The series, titled Specialità Torinesi, exemplifies Fornasetti’s enduring fascination with Italian heritage and his ability to transform everyday objects into works of art. Sought after by collectors, these plates are a fine example of the designer’s mid-century collaborations and his singular creative voice. Piero Fornasetti (1913–1988) was an Italian painter, sculptor, interior decorator, and engraver whose whimsical and highly distinctive style became iconic in 20th-century design. Known for his surrealist imagery, classical references, and meticulous craftsmanship, Fornasetti created thousands of objects that blurred the line between art and utility. His most celebrated motif is the face of Lina Cavalieri, an opera singer whose enigmatic expression he reinterpreted in hundreds of variations. Fornasetti’s work often draws from antiquity, architecture, and trompe-l'œil, resulting in pieces that are at once intellectual and playful. His designs continue to influence contemporary interiors and remain highly collectible for their originality, elegance, and timeless appeal. CONDITION In Great Condition - Wear expected with age.
