Black and White Transferware Marble or Cracked Ice Ironstone Plates, Set of 4

About the Item

A set of four early 19th Century English Ironstone, twelve sided plates in a ‘Marble’ pattern, sometimes called ‘Cracked Ice.’ A tissue printed sheet pattern, applied under the glaze, in shades of black and gray on a white stoneware body showing nice bluing. A set of four, each plate varies slightly in intensity of color. Impressed on the verso, ‘Read Ironstone’ attributed to Jonah Read, Hanley, Staffordshire, England, circa 1833-1839 Measures: 8.0 in. diameter x 1.0 in height. Very good antique condition, the expected very light roughing to the rims. One plate has a small loss to the footing, not effecting the seating. Stilt marks are a kiln effect.
