About the Item

This is a very beautiful cake serving plate made by Coalport in 1834. It was made in the famous "Adelaide" shape and was hand painted with exceptional flowers, probably by Thomas Dixon. This plate would have belonged to a large tea service and was meant to serve cake or biscuits. Coalport was one of the leading potters in 19th and 20th Century, coming out with many innovative designs. The pottery emerged around the year 1800 in Shropshire, right on the edge of Staffordshire and near other great makers such as Spode, Minton, Davenport and many others. They went on to become a major potter in the 19th Century and brought out many iconic designs. This plate was made in the Rococo Revival era. It would have belonged to a large tea and coffee service. Its shape is called "Adelaide", after the much-loved Queen Adelaide, wife of King William IV and beloved auntie of Queen Victoria, who succeeded William in 1837. Adelaide was known to be a good and amiable person who had a positive influence on her husband King William, who was known to be a difficult person who was not endowed with the necessary diplomatic skills for a King. She also was a loving aunt to Victoria, who had an otherwise rather loveless childhood, so it only made sense that Coalport honoured Queen Victoria's ascent to the throne with a porcelain shape named after her favourite aunt. The decoration consists of many factors: there is fine moulding on the rim of the plate, a dramatic pattern of gilt and beige on the grey ground, and exceptionally beautiful hand painted flowers. Mostly likely the flowers were painted by the famous porcelain painter Thomas Dixon, who worked at Coalport alongside his entire family between about 1821 and 1875. Dixon was known for his very full and slightly crowded but balanced and graceful flower paintings. This plate would have belonged to a very high-end tea service and it is wonderful by itself. Condition Report The plate is in perfect antique condition with no damage, crazing or repairs. There is some light rubbing to the gilding, as visible in the pictures. The plate is unmarked, as was common with items of this period, but it has the hand painted pattern number 3/38, which points to the year 1834. Antique British porcelain is never perfect. Kilns were fired on coal in the 1800s and early 1900s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. British makers were also known for their experimentation, and sometimes this resulted in technically imperfect results. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can have small firing lines or develop crazing over time, which should not be seen as damage but as an imperfection of the maker's recipes, probably unknown at the time of making. Items have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear, and gilt can have signs of slight disintegration even if never handled. I will reflect any damage, repairs, obvious stress marks, crazing or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks, stains and gilt disintegration can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account. There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can easily see with the eye; a glazing line is a break in the glazing only; hairline is extremely tight and/or superficial and not picked up by the finger; and a crack is obvious both to the eye and the finger.
