About the Item

This stunning hand painted gilded plate is sure to impress. The J.P.L. mark on the back dates the piece to 1906-1932. The Pouyat family was one of the oldest French names connected with the Limoges porcelain industry. Jean Pouyat's grandfather had a faience factory in the 1760s at Saint Yriex. He also owned kaolin mines in that area in the late 1700s. Jean's father, Francois, operated a hard-paste porcelain factory in Paris from the early 1800s until circa 1840. Francois became a partner with Laurentius Russinger in Manufacture de la Courtille, a hard paste manufacturing business at the Locre factory in Paris. In 1800, Francois emerged as the sole owner of La Courtille, and his sons, Leonard and Jean-Baptiste joined him in operating the factory. In 1816, the two Pouyat brothers formed a partnership with the owner of a factory in Fours to produce porcelain for decoration in Paris. They bought the factory in 1820, and Leonard Pouyat directed operations until his death in 1845. The Fours factory continued in production until 1865. The Locre factory (in Paris) was sold in 1823, but Jean-Baptiste Pouyat remained in Paris for a time as head of sales. However, Pére Francois Pouyat was not yet finished in the porcelain business: he opened a small factory in Limoges in 1832, and then in 1835 he bought a clay works and porcelain workshop established in Saint-Leonard, near Limoges. Jean-Baptiste joined his father at this operation and in 1840 succeeded him as head of operations. Jean-Baptiste enlarged the Limoges factory circa 1844 when it employed 127 workers. This factory made porcelain of exceptional whiteness and even texture; the pieces decorated at the factory were renowned for their artistry and elegance. P. Comolera, a modeler, provided designs for Pouyat for over 20 years. Jean Baptiste Pouyat was succeeded by his sons Emile (1806-1892), Louis (b 1809) and Leonard-Eugene (1817-1876). Emil trained at the Locre factory (Paris) and was head of the Limoges factory from 1849-1883. W. Guerin bought the Pouyat Limoges factory in 1912. The Pouyat and William Guerin companies were joined in 1912 China manufactured by the Pouyat factory represented another of the most visible Limoges companies on the American antique market. The firm carried on a large export trade with the United States during the late 1800s. Examples of Pouyat marked porcelain range from whitewares and table china to factory decorated art objects and accessories. The company was particularly famous for its whiteware or "blanks". The company did not produce factory decorated dinner service until after 1890. The earliest mark attributed to the company dates circa 1851. The mark on this plate is not registered until 1875 and it was re-registered in 1891 and France was added and was not registered until 1906. So that dates this plate from 1906-1932.
