Luneville, French Faïence Majolica Trompe L'oeil Napkin Asparagus Plate

About the Item

From the Luneville Faïence factory in France, an Aesthetic Movement trompe l’oeil asparagus plate, circa 1880-1889. A wonderful illusion where the asparagus spears lay on a raised section imitative of a white lace napkin. The four corners of the napkin are stretched tightly and threaded through ‘holes’ in the plate itself. Raised mold work shows branching twigs with berries on a pale turquoise blue ground. Book reference: Pg. 16, Artichauts et Asperges en Barbotine by Maryse Bottero Measures: 10 in. Diameter x .75 in. Height – Unmarked. A fine overall crazing to the glazing, expected of age and use.
