P&H Choisy French Creamware Faïence Scheffer Assiette Parlante Plates, Set/4

About the Item

A set of four French faïence transfer printed creamware “assiette parlante” or talking plates, produced by P&H Choisy, Seine, France – circa 1824-1836. Transfer printed in black with four different courting scenes sourced from the lithographs by Jean Gabriel Scheffer (1797-1876). Scheffer was a Swiss school painter and lithographer active in Paris from 1822 to 1846. He produced humorous lithographs illustrating Paris customs and manners. His original 1826-28 lithographs of the scenes that decorate these plates can be found in the Musée Carnevalet collection in Paris. Inscribed on the front as follows: C’est un gage de Fidelite. Prends garde de le perdre. = It is a pledge of Fidelity. Be careful not to lose it. Ah bah! un de perdu, deux de retrouves. = Ah bah! one lost, two found. Comment ma petite, il vous ecrit en prose. = How my little one, he writes to you in prose. Il n’y a pas de danger…. = There is no danger. 7.75 in. Diameter x 1.25 in. H An impressed makers mark on the verso, Valentin Paillart and Hippolyte Hautin, the P&H Choisy shield. Very good antique condition with the expected minor wear. A rim flake to one plate, Il n’y a pas de danger…, as shown.
