19th Century Oak Tantalus Stamped Mappin & Webb

About the Item

19th Century set of three cut-glass whiskey decanters displayed in original oak tantalus stamped Mappin & Webb. Traditionally designed with a distinctive lock and key feature, the aim of which is to show off the contents whilst stopping unauthorised people from drinking. The name is a reference to the unsatisfied temptations of the Greek mythological character Tantalus. Mappin & Webb traces its origins to a silver workshop founded in Sheffield in 1775 and has held Royal Warrants to British monarchs since 1897.
