Exceptional French Silver & Daum Glass Wine Ewer / Claret Jug, France Circa 1900

About the Item

A truly exceptional French silver (.950 fine) & art glass wine ewer, showing a flattened ovoid body with a partial matte surface decorated with etched thistle motifs highlighted in gilt detail, the remaining area left clear and decorated with textured motifs of the cross of Lorraine outlined in gilt. The neck fitted with a silver collar & spout with a hinged cover affixed to a foliate molded handle, all bearing 1st standard silver marks (.950 fine) and makers marks. The glass body is most certainly by Daum, however the gilt signature has apparently been rubbed. This emerald green-tinted blown glass wine glass exemplifies the exceptional craftsmanship of the Daum manufactory in Nancy around 1900. Its ribbed design lends a subtly animated texture, while delicate gold highlights - applied using the combed decoration technique - gracefully accent the rim and base. This model closely resembles the renowned Gui glassware service designed by Edmond Lachenal (1855 - c.1955), an esteemed ceramicist and painter. For this commission, Lachenal collaborated with the Daum glassworks and the Keller & Guérin manufactory in Lunéville for the faience components. This iconic Art Nouveau service is now housed in the Musée d’Orsay, following a donation by dealer Rispal in 2005.
