About the Item
Antique 18th century glass goblet with engraving from Thuringia
German, c. 1740
Dimensions: Height 29cm, diameter 12.5cm
Produced in Germany in c. 1740, this antique glass goblet is a fine example of 18th century Thuringian glassmaking. The goblet stands on a circular foot, engraved with foliate details. The stem of the goblet is moulded, with a fluted section and a round knopped upper section. The cup itself is of traditional form, decorated either side with fine engraving.
On one side, there is a coat of arms featuring a crane and grapes. According to traditional heraldry, a crane can symbolise vigilance, justice and longevity, whereas grapes are symbolic of good luck. On the other side of the goblet is a monogram with crossed feathers and a ducal coronet.
