French Art Deco Emile Galle Cameo Glass Sailing ship Vase, circa 1920

About the Item

Fabulous and rare Emile Galle cameo vase with sailing ships in predominantly blue and purple with orange yellow highlights, signed (image 5) Provost MkIV produced c1920. In most of the sailing ships little people can be seen seated - Galle sailing ship vases are very rare as Madame Galle disapproved of such images and they only came into production after her death. We have never seen this colourway for a this sailing ship design before -rare anyway, is usually comes in a purply green or a brown amber -The last photo image shows the vase as it might be seen on a window ledge -the vase was designed with an oval opening which, when the sun is high, projects a circular sun on to horizon of the image (not exactly part of the design this only happens when the sun is at the right height) Emile Galle was probably the greatest glass maker of all time and one of the founding father's of the Art Nouveau movement.
