About the Item
These WMF Ikora glass vases, designed by Karl Wiedmann around 1930, were produced by the Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik (WMF) glassworks. The Ikora line, introduced in the late 1920s, employed complex layering and chemical treatments to produce distinctive surface textures and color variations. Wiedmann, a key figure in the development of Ikora glass, utilized experimental glass fusion and controlled reactions to achieve striking visual effects.
Each vase features a tall, slightly tapered cylindrical form with a flared rim. The surface showcases a deep red-orange hue at the top, transitioning into earthy brown and amber tones, interspersed with a network of veined white streaks. The crackled and mottled textures, achieved through layered glass techniques, enhance the depth of coloration. The vases are free-blown, with the glass manipulated during the molten stage to create the marbled and striated effects characteristic of the Ikora style.
WMF's Ikora glass was produced using proprietary techniques that involved layering different glass compositions and subjecting them to controlled chemical reactions. The result was a highly decorative surface, often imitating natural stone or organic patterns. This pair aligns with WMF's focus on experimental glasswork during the Art Deco period.
