About the Item

A magnificent large pair of baluster shape, early Baccarat Opaline Enamelled Cherub Vases. Each vase is decorated in fine polychrome enamelling depicting three different Cherubs, two with bows, one with drums, one with a bird, one with a wine glass and one with a mirror. Each cherub is surrounded with polychrome enamel swags of flowers -topped with blue ornate bows and lavish rococo revival gilding (please note some of the gilding especially just above the cherubs is a little worn) The vases are by Baccarat and the decoration is attributed to Jean-François Robert, possibly the greatest enameller of his time, he decorated many of the great Baccarat vases of this period and also worked for Sevres, who were highly famed for vases decorated with flowers and cherubs. Sadly Jean-François Robert never signed his work. These are the only Baccarat vases we know of from this period decorated with Cherubs Jean-François Robert, an artist at the Royal Porcelain Manufactory of Sèvres (1806-34 and 1835-43), decorated opalines by Baccarat and Saint Louis with various designs in enamels as well as gold, silver and platinum from 1843-1855 This were executed around 1845 in the reign of Louis Phillipe
