Paula Radke Large Fused Dichroic Glass Tray, American Studio Art Glass
About the Item
Vintage large art glass tray features abstract graphic design in multicolored glass on dichroic glass background. Deep, jewel-like colors of dichroic glass, with color shift from Bordeaux red to forest green, create a dark, moody backdrop for bright linear designs in turquoise, yellow, and purple color; a line of clear glass divides the square tray in organic, free-form way, introducing a negative space in a colorful composition.
The piece is signed and dated by the artist in etching on the bottom.
Dichroic glass is a type of glass that displays multiple colors when viewed from different angles. This unique material is created by coating glass with multiple micro-layers of metallic oxides, such as titanium, chromium, and aluminum, that are applied using a vacuum deposition process which allows for precise control over the thickness and composition of each layer. The modern form of dichroic glass was developed in the mid-20th century by NASA scientists for use in space shuttles; it was called “dichroic” for its ability to reflect certain wavelengths of light while allowing others to pass through.
Paula Radke (b. 1954) is an established American glass artist. She studied silversmithing, printmaking, ceramics, watercolor and drawing before discovering glass making in the early 1980s: blowing, fusing, slumping, casting and lampwork. She studied with Boyce Lundstrom at Camp Colton, Oregon, before co-founding the glassworks studio in Harmony, CA in 1986, where she worked until 1992 before moving to her new studio and gallery on the waterfront in Morro Bay, California. Radke was an early contributor to the Glass Bead Makers Movement in the early 1990s. She creates one of a kind bowls and plates, as well as decorative beads, made with dichroic glass, fused glass, and other materials and techniques.
