Lily of the Valley was a widely deployed symbol to represent the 'return of happiness' within a Jacobite context. Tulips were also used within acrostic sets. These are some of the ingredients of the typical Jacobite melodrama engraved upon period glassware! All the romantic intrigue of deposed royalty, a dalliance with a swooning local girl, desperate cross-country flight under the muzzles of musket-wielding troopers and their bloodthirsty commanders a tragic denouement on a desolate battlefield (and a confusing, irrelevant and untrue epilogue about someone hiding up a tree for good measure) - wow !
The Intire Glass Shop advertised Flower'd glasses on their trade card as early as 1742. With floral designs featuring prominently in decorators books...

Georgian Irish Wine Drinking Glass Hand-blown thick Cotton Twist Stem, Ca 1770
Located in Lincoln, Lincolnshire
This is a superb hand-blown example of an Irish made, mid-Georgian, wine drinking glass with a thick double series opaque twist (DSOT) stem, dating from the middle of the 18th century, circa 1765 to 1770.
These glasses are very collectable. It is made from English lead glass which is relatively heavy and has a soft grey colour, with slight age related wear as expected with over 200 years of use.
The glass has the usual striations, inclusions and tiny bubbles you would expect to see in 18th Century glass, which gives these glasses their unique charm.
This glass has a bucket bowl which sits on a tall, unusually thick, double series opaque or cotton twist...

Bowl : Round funnel - engraved with a rose, unusually without either open or closed bud, and an oak leaf.
Stem : Plain

Pontil : Snapped
Glass Type : Lead
Size : 16cm height, 6.1cm diameter bowl, 6.8cm diameter foot

At first we were concerned about the lack of an open or closed bud, this is the first example of it's kind that we have seen. The engraving is certainly contemporaneous with the glass and and the engraving style matches with Seddon's engraver A.
