Georgian Irish Wine Drinking Glass Hand-blown thick Cotton Twist Stem, Ca 1770

$1,764

About

This is a superb hand-blown example of an Irish made, mid-Georgian, wine drinking glass with a thick double series opaque twist (DSOT) stem, dating from the middle of the 18th century, circa 1765 to 1770. These glasses are very collectable. It is made from English lead glass which is relatively heavy and has a soft grey colour, with slight age related wear as expected with over 200 years of use. The glass has the usual striations, inclusions and tiny bubbles you would expect to see in 18th Century glass, which gives these glasses their unique charm. This glass has a bucket bowl which sits on a tall, unusually thick, double series opaque or cotton twist stem consisting of a pair of multi-ply spiral bands wound outside a pair of heavy spiral threads. The stem leads to a good and very wide conical foot having a rough snapped off pontil mark to the underside. There are no chips, cracks or any evidence of restoration. The thickness of the stem makes the bowl look smaller as per a cordial glass but we think this was made as a wine glass. Either way, it is a very beautiful example. This lovely thick stem is indicative of an Irish glass maker. Dimensions: Bowl rim diameter : 1.94 inches Foot Diameter : 3.07 inches Height: 6.25 inches This is a heavy glass and is a beautiful example of its type with excellent dimensional proportions. It has a good ring to it when tapped with a finger.
