Rare French Art Nouveau Emile Galle Cameo Glass Vase Seaweed -Wartime Production

About the Item

Exceptionally rare war time production Emile Galle cameo vase -in brown over orange. Depicting seaweed. Signed Provost Mk III see last picture for dating chart. In 1914 War broke out and the Germans attacked the hills above Nancy in the hearing of the Galle factory. Panicking the management closed down the factory furnaces too quickly and they never worked properly again. (they were replaced in 1919) For the first part of the War the Factory could only work by finishing already blown blanks as the damaged furnaces would only operate at relatively low temperatures. In early 1917 a series of Seaweed pattern vases on new blanks were made using a technique that did not require high temperatures -They were only made for a few weeks and then after production stopped the factory (seen to be working) was bombed by the Germans destroying almost all the stock of seaweed design vases - Just a few examples survived and this vase is a rare example -a pattern only made briefly in 1917. Emile Galle was probably the greatest glass maker of all time and one of the founding father's of the Art Nouveau movement.
