Rare Rene Lalique Clear Glass Moineau Menu signed c 1931

About the Item

An Exceptionally rare clear glass Rene Lalique signed Moineau Menu - Ref Marcilhac 3478 - This rare menu was designed to have it's menu items added directly on to it with a thick lead pencil (which could then be removed simply by a damp cloth) -an anachronism from the days of small French Cafés with single fixed menus. The image is particularly striking. It features, on the top surface a Moineau (Sparrow) appearing to be pecking at its own image in the top of an icy pond. This was achieved by the bird being featured on the surface upright and then again underneath in reverse. To give the bird the illusion of size and depth the top bird has an raised section behind it -between the bird tails it says MENU . A brilliant and unusual image, cleverly executed.

This is a Documented Carres Perles pattern 'Cloison' or wall panel. The fact that it is an unused single panel and signed (they were usually not signed) suggests this was a salesman's sample. It is Documented in the Lalique book...
