Rare Rene Lalique, Signed, original grey stained Glass Faune Menu Holder c1928

About the Item

Rare Rene Lalique original Grey Black stained Faune Menu - Ref Marcilhac 3502 page 784 (black edition) -signed 'R Lalique France n: 3502'. This type of Menu holder uniquely was designed to hold a paper menu in it's front crease and lie against the back sheet of glass. The original grey black staining is in excellent condition. The image along the base is of a smiling horned mythical beast (presumably Bacchus) with garlands of grapes Designed for the kind of small French Café that had one daily menu - Rene Lalique designs with mythical beasts are rare and highly prized. René Lalique was possibly the most famous of all glass makers -the most collectable pieces by him are those produced during his lifetime (ie pre 1945), these are signed, like this piece, R Lalique.
