About the Item
A very rare vase in red and black by contemporary Finnish designer Brita Flander and Nuutajärvi blower Timo Niekka designed and made for the opening of the Marimekko store in Kamppi Helsinki. 20 pieces were ever made of this series especially for this occasion. This is no. 2, signed and marked accordingly. The vase is in beautiful condition and has light scratches to the bottom from table fiction.
Brita Maria Flander 1957- is a Finnish designer. Flander is particularly known for her glass objects and lighting fixtures.
Flander studied industrial design and graduated as a Bachelor of Arts in 1989. She worked at the interior design firm Carita Holthoer from 1982 to 1984 and thereafter as a freelancer. Since the 1980s, she has designed products for companies such as Skanno, Artek, Innojok, Marimekko, and Hackman-Iittala.
Since 1987, Flander has participated in group exhibitions in Europe and North America. Her works are included in the collections of the National Museum of Finland, the Design Museum, and the Finnish Glass Museum. Internationally, her works have been acquired by the Musée des Arts Décoratifs de Louvre in Paris, the Spanish Fundacion Nacional del Vidrio, the Czech Crystalex, and the Corning Museum of Glass in the United States.
Flander has also created unique glass artworks, including the 8×20 meter piece titled *Iris*, which hangs under the glass roof of Stockmann in Helsinki. Commissioned works have also been produced for the Ingvar Kamprad Design Centre at Lund University, the official residence of the President of Finland in Mäntyniemi, the Sammonlahti Church in Lappeenranta, and the Oulu Cathedral.
