Tapio Wirkkala's Murano glass dish for Venini

About the Item

Plate by Tapio Wirkkala for Venini, worked in incalmo blown glass with filigree. The incalmo technique consists of hot coupling two blown shapes along their circumference, so as to obtain in the same object the suggestive encounter of differentiated and, usually, differently colored zones. The diameter of the plate is about 52 cm and it is signed on the back. The state of preservation is excellent. Tapio Wirkkala was born in Hangö on June 2, 1915, and studied at the Töölö School in Helsinki. Like her siblings Helena and Tauno, Wirkkala became passionate about the arts, thanks in part to her father Ilmari, a cemetery architect, and her mother Selma, a woodcarver. After his six years of secondary school, Wirkkala enrolled in the School of Applied Arts (Taideteollinen keskuskoulu) in Helsinki, and in 1933 he specialized in decorative sculpture.
