Ten Large Champagne Flutes Hand-Blown Antique Glass England 18th Century c-1780
About the Item
This exceptional set of ten large English champagne flutes was hand-blown in the 18th century and stands an impressive 8.5 inches tall—unusually tall for the period and this form.
Crafted from clear English flint glass, designed to mimic the sparkle of rock crystal, each flute displays the clarity, weight, and subtle brilliance that made this material so sought after in Georgian England.
The elongated funnel-shaped bowls taper into slender, tubular stems, which rise from wide, circular feet, resulting in a design that is both elegant and commanding.
The flutes' height of 8.5" enhances their visual drama while also offering a generous, graceful vessel for sparkling wine.
The fine rim and narrow profile preserve effervescence beautifully.
Each foot bears the pontil scar left by the glassblower's rod, a signature of freehand glassblowing and a mark of authenticity.
These hand-blown variations give each glass a slightly unique character, reinforcing their artisanal origin.
The flutes feel substantial and refined in the hand, evoking the sophistication of Georgian-era dining. Whether used for toasts or displayed as part of a curated collection, this rare matched set is a striking example of 18th-century English glassmaking at its best.
Dimensions: 8.5 inches tall x 3.75 inches in diameter at base and rim

Price: $1,200.
Background on the Champagne Flute:
The champagne flute emerged in early 18th-century England, alongside a broader trend toward glass stemware. As English glassmakers perfected the production of flint glass—renowned for its clarity and brilliance—glass gradually replaced metal and ceramic in refined households.
Flint glass was heavier than continental wares and designed to mimic the sparkle of rock crystal. These English glasses helped establish the tradition of "crystal" as the benchmark of fine stemware.
