Antique Queen Anne Britannia Standard Silver Mug



A fine and impressive antique Queen Anne English Britannia standard silver mug; an addition to our collectable early 18th century silverware collection This impressive antique Queen Anne English Britannia standard silver mug has a plain tapering cylindrical form. The surface of the mug is plain and embellished with an applied girdle to the upper portion. The rim and base of this impressive Queen Anne silver mug are encircled with bands of applied moulded decoration. This 18th century mug is fitted with an impressive S-scroll handle ornamented with impressive applied bead decoration in addition to the contemporary engraved initials 'CID' to the thumb piece. The lower socket of the handle is embellished with an impressive applied cut card leaf ornamentation. Britannia Silver, The Britannia silver standard of 958 (95.84% of fine silver), denoted by the icon of the seated Britannia holding an oval shield, was introduced by William III in 1697. This was to indicate the slightly higher standard of silver from sterling silver standard of 925 (92.5% of fine silver). Condition This antique Queen Anne silver mug is a very good gauge of silver as to be expected for its type, excellent quality and in excellent condition in keeping with age. There are some minor indentations to the handle in keeping with age and use. Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the mug are all clear, in keeping with age and location.
