About the Item

It is made entirely in silver and decorated with patterns in relief, round, engraved and chiseled. It is inspired by similar pieces made in Germany in the 16th century in the Mannerism art. This is due to the importance that the German silversmith had in this century; German and Central European architects generally created for cabinets of very rich collector pieces designed to be shown and unused, the greatest example of virtuosity and richness of the Mannerist ornamental silverware. One of the most recognizable types of Mannerist German silversmiths be such a high crown, with cylindrical container differentiated and large cap subcopa. It is functional or ornamental glasses, according to the richness and abundance of decoration. This decorative profusion, combining all sorts of reasons, is key in the Mannerist silver, and reached the point of replacing parts of the structure for decorative purposes, as we see here in the shaft, consisting of a vase, and pommel, with figure in the round of a young warrior classic. The main reason for this design are the gallones in relief, which take the form of oval recesses and are separated by baquetones with parallel transverse lines. We see them in the subcopa, the painter and cap, while also appear in the foot, although simplified, without recesses or baquetones. The piece stands on a circular foot flat and smooth base with two steps ornately decorated cupulate: gallones up and props intertwined with flowers and classic down figureheads, ornamental motifs typical of Mannerist background. The shaft, as mentioned, takes the form of a vase balustrade adorned with large braces as a rib, topped by bird heads. The container is cylindrical in shape, with cubcopa great relief, decorated with embossed hermas, again a typical reason for the Mannerist style silversmiths. Top, under the mouth, also it bulges outward, although its decoration gallones is simple enough to not overshadow the delicate and meticulous engraving embossing and chiseling of the central zone. In it we see two oval cartouches that host the performances of two gods of classical mythology: Bacchus, serving wine in a glass on a background landscape with houses, and Mercury, running in a wooded landscape. Between the two gussets classic richly ornamental masks are located. Finally the lid is domed, with curly perimeter and stepped structure. The knob is sculptural and classic depicts a young warrior, perhaps the god Mars. Weight: 1742 gr. (with counterweight on the base) Size: 10 x 10 x 33 cms.
