Continental Mottle Glazed Art Pottery Wine Flagon

About the Item

A very stylish antique Continental, possibly Portuguese, art pottery wine flagon decorated in mottled glazes dating from the 19th century. The flagon is lightly hand potted standing on a narrow round unglazed foot with recessed base. The body is of round bulbous shape with an angled shoulder with a central carrying loop with two further integral loops probably to allow it to have a carrying rope attached. The flagon has a raised filling opening to one side of the handle and an acorn shaped pouring spout to the opposite side. The vessel is decorated in green, brown and black glazes over pale yellow glazed ground and the ceramic has a similarity in style and glaze to pieces made by some of the ‘Palissy’ style majolica pieces made in Portugal. The flagon is not marked. Provenance: acquired in the British Art Market. In good condition with wear associated with age and use.
