Four Italian majolica pitchers

About the Item

The four majolica pitchers can be traced to the Renaissance period and an Italian production. Specifically, three of them were produced in Faenza between the 15th and 16th centuries and one in Pesaro between the 16th and 17th centuries. As majolica tiles, they all have a white color base. However, in the three Faenza jugs, blue and light blue prevail, contrasted by some yellow-orange notes; while the Pesaro jug leaves much room for the base color, contrasted mainly by brown tones. The first of the three Faenza jugs is decorated mainly with brushstrokes that create geometric and natural patterns. A large central frame then depicts a harbor, recognizable by the presence of turrets and a ship. The manufacture is from Faenza but, given the peculiar subject matter depicted, it may have been commissioned for a seaside town, perhaps Rimini. The pitcher is beautifully made, although it has a chipping near the spout and small failures. The second pitcher has similar patterns but illustrates in a central frame the towers of a castle with flags. It has a small chipping in the upper edge near the handle. On the second pitcher can be seen a decoration similar to the others with geometric and natural motifs, although no figurative subject appears. The overall structure is intact due to probable restorations carried out following breakage. The manufacture of the last jug can be traced to Pesaro. It features the decoration of a heraldic coat of arms with a two-headed eagle surmounted by a crown. It is a symbol similar to that of the Habsburg family. Small imperfections in the edges. Jugs can be considered a group for a beautiful decoration. Jug sizes have margins of variation of a few centimeters.
