French Terracotta Pitcher Basque Jug House Hand Painted Signed, 19th Century

About the Item

Antique terracotta jug French Basque hand painted signed by Artist. This terracotta pitcher from Basque Country was later painted, circa 1970. Good and heavy. Oil paints with white under coat. In the 19th century, this pitcher was used to keep the well water cool. The artist used the shape of the pitcher to create a miniature house: the bottom represents the walls of the house, with windows and a door. The top represents the roof, and the pourer the chimney. Here, the artist has depicted a typical house in south-west France, with its half-timbering made of wooden posts and cob. He also painted many details, such as the vegetation climbing the wall, a pair of pigeons and semi-circular windows.
