About the Item

This impressive creamware pitcher, made in England circa 1830, presents a vivid tableau of Odd Fellows and Masonic imagery. Every surface is alive with hand-painted color, lustrous accents, and moral allegory. At the front, a wreath of laurel and oak frames the declaration, “We are Odd Fellows When we act and Do the thing which is Right.” Around it run the words “How grand in Age, How fair in Youth, is Holy Friendship, Love and Truth.” Above the motto, an open palm enclosing a heart symbolizes charity freely given and sincerity of purpose. The reverse side bears a powerful emblematic composition beneath a radiant sun. An angel holding a budding branch stands opposite Lady Justice, her scales poised in equilibrium, together flanking the Odd Fellows motto “Amicitia, Amor et Veritas”—Friendship, Love, and Truth. These figures personify the fraternity’s ideal of moral balance and benevolence. The budding branch recalls the regenerative strength of truth, which, even among “the most barren facts,” restores life and meaning. The bold floral sprays on either side, together with the luster-painted rim and spout, add a note of optimism and beauty to this symbolic piece. Both Masonic and Odd Fellows imagery embody the spirit of moral rectitude, philanthropy, and brotherhood that characterized early nineteenth-century social orders. This is a good, Mason's ironstone hydra jug with a snake handle in the Cashmire De Thibet pattern dating to the William 1Vth English 19th century period, circa 1832-1836 The jug has an octagonal hydra shape with a snake handle. This pattern is not often seen. It is called "Cashmire De Thibet" and is illustrated on page 60 of the book; A Guide To Mason's Patent Ironstone Patterns, published by The Mason's Collectors' Club. The jug is unmarked to the base as was sometimes the case, but is definitely by Mason's Ironstone as they were the only manufacturer to produce a jug in this shape with this pattern and dating to the English William 1Vth period circa 1832-1836. Overall a very nice Masons Hydra Jug or Pitcher in a rare pattern. Notes on the pattern. This unusual name of "Cashmire De Thibet" was a name applied circa 1832-1836, to summer scarves...
