Martin Brothers Grotesque Tall figural Ewer 1880

About the Item

A rare, probably unique, tall grotesque figural ewer by Robert Wallace Martin for the Martin Brothers dated 1880. The ewer is very tall and modelled as a fanciful animal seated upright on its hind legs and with its front paws by its side. The ewer has wide gaping mouth with a shaped nostrils , bulging eyes and small raised ears. A large tail forms a loop handle. The body is incised to simulate fur and the ewer is glazed in ochre with brown oxide and black highlights. The ewer is marked to the base including the date 5.3.80. Provenance: Acquired directly from a private American collection. Sale; Sotheby's New York, The Harriman Judd Collection Part Two, Saturday October 6 2001, lot 150 One of the ears has been broken and professionally restored and the ewer is in excellent presentable condition.
