About the Item

A Monumental and Very Unusual Silver Viennese Enamel Mythological Stein, by Karl Rössler, Marked, "KR" and "A". A "Tour de Force" of late 19th-century Viennese enamel artistry, this monumental silver-mounted beer stein exemplifies the opulence, narrative richness, and technical virtuosity characteristic of the Austro-Hungarian Empire’s finest decorative arts. Exceptional in scale and execution, the stein is crafted from finely chased silver and lavishly enameled with mythological tableaux across three registers, each bordered by elaborate gilt scrollwork and Renaissance Revival ornamentation. The central body and lid are adorned with a series of finely painted cartouches that appear to draw direct inspiration from the academic works of William-Adolphe Bouguereau. Rendered in luminous polychrome enamel, these mythological scenes are distinguished by their sculptural realism, classical composition, and emotive finesse—all hallmarks of Bouguereau’s atelier. At the upper tier, surrounding the domed lid and shoulder, pastoral nymphs and celestial figures evoke compositions akin to Les Oréades (1902), with their ethereal grace and upward movement, while other panels suggest visual echoes of Nymphs and Satyr (1873)—one of Bouguereau’s most celebrated interpretations of classical revelry. The figural finial, likely depicting Bacchus or a mythic reveler, adds a sculptural dimension to the narrative program. The central register, occupying the main body of the stein, presents a striking depiction of The Birth of Venus (1879), modeled after Bouguereau’s iconic canvas. Venus emerges from the sea upon a scallop shell, flanked by adoring putti and attended by sea nymphs, her form rendered with the idealized beauty and anatomical precision for which the artist is renowned. The lower tier continues the theme of mythological revelry with dancing nymphs and cavorting satyrs, again suggesting compositional elements from Nymphs and Satyr. The surrounding motifs of grotesques, acanthus scrolls, and stylized foliate arabesques reinforce the stein’s alignment with the decorative vocabulary of the Renaissance Revival. The arched handle is a work of art in itself—enameled in rich hues and terminating in a grotesque mask, a hallmark of Viennese historicist silverwork. The interior of the lid and base are also exquisitely enameled, featuring further figural decoration—an exceptional detail that elevates this piece well beyond standard examples. The sophistication and iconographic unity of the stein strongly suggest it was created by one of Vienna’s premier silversmith-enamellers, Karl Rössler. Combining historicist elegance with a refined academic sensibility, this stein offers collectors a museum-quality object that bridges the worlds of fine art, mythological allegory, and 19th-century decorative mastery.
