Pair of Early George III Mugs by Whipham & Wright, London, 1764.
About the Item
A very fine pair of early George III Mugs made in London in 1764 by Thomas Whipham II & Charles Wright.
The Mugs stand on an applied circular foot decorated with reeding. The slightly tapering sides have an everted rim and "tucked in" base, a design first seen in the 1720's. The plain scroll handles are attached to the main body with oval mouldings and the front of each piece is engraved with a contemporary lion rampant Crest. The Mugs are in excellent condition, have a good colour and are very well marked in the foot. To find pairs of mugs is extremely rare during the Georgian period. The interior displays fine hammer marks from when they were raised, which is always a nice, original, feature to see.
