Rare Vernon Kilns California Heritage Large Pitcher, Peach 1950s Mid Century Mod

About the Item

Vernonware large ceramic pitcher was made by Vernon Kilns in California in 1950s. The pitcher is made on San Marino shape - water pitcher with ice lip - and is decorated with vitreous glaze in California Heritage pattern, thick mottled almond drip glaze on rare peach background, creating a subtle pattern in restrained color palette. It is a striking example of Midcentury design and Modern California ceramics. An example from this pattern, also on San Marino shape, is currently in collection and on display in Brooklyn Museum (tea pot with lid in purple palette, another rare color). Vernon Kilns, one of the "Big Five" of California potteries, was a creative studio that produced artistic as well as utilitarian pieces, operating from 1931 to 1958. Since 1935 Vernon Kilns started hiring well-known designers and artists to create new lines or tableware and art ware. The pitcher is 11" tall; it is signed with "Cerametal Process California Heritage Vernonware California USA" stamp on the bottom. It is in good vintage condition with no noticeable signs of use.
