Chamberlain Worcester Porcelain Comport Decorated with Fancy Birds

About the Item

This large porcelain comport is by Chamberlain's of Worcester and is decorated with a hand painted scene of Fancy Birds in the manner of George Davis, the colours of which are still vibrant. The bowl is supported by four lions paw legs onto a square, stepped base with canted corners and concave sides. The underside of the bowl is decorated with gilding as are the legs and base. The diameter of the bowl is 284 mm (11.25 inches) and it stands 148 mm (5.75 inches) high. It is a substantial piece weighing in at 1.69 kg (3.72 pounds). Overall its condition is very good, but I have noted the following faults-some very minor loss of the gilding, mainly to the high spots, a 5 mm (.25 inch) long firing crack to the base of the footrim of the bowl where it joins the base, some glaze faults ex the kiln, two very small areas where glaze inclusions have broken off and some very faint scratches to the paint. Some of these faults are barely noticeable to the naked eye. It is unmarked but the gadrooned edge is typical of Chamberlains. Examples can be seen in Colour Plate XII and plate 152, amongst others, in "Chamberlain-Worcester Porcelain" by Geoffrey Godden 1992. C1820.

  • Chamberlain's Worcester Porcelain Hand Painted Part Tea Set
    By Chamberlains Worcester
    Located in East Geelong, VIC
This Chamberlain's Worcester porcelain hand painted and gilded tea set consists of 31 pieces- a teapot and stand, a lidded sugar box, milk jug, slop bowl, two cake plates and twelve tea bowls and twelve saucers. The pattern, 351, on Chamberlain's New Oval shape, has retained its vibrancy of colour, but the gilding on the handles shows some wear. Four of the pieces have sustained some damage, the most obvious is to the tip of the teapot spout which has been fitted with a metal collar so that it can still pour. There are also two small chips to the inside rim of the pot. The sugar box as a chip to the base and another to the underside of the lid. One of the plates has a star crack to the base, and one of the teabowls has a crack. The milk jug has a shallow firing crack to the inside, but this was filled with glaze in the factory. Apart from the pattern number, the set is unmarked. However, the pattern is shown in plate 239 of Berthoud's "Compendium of British Cups". The teapot corresponds with plate 1001 of Berthoud's "Directory of British Teapots...
