About the Item

A classic 1970's Mexican hardwood parquetry serving tray by American designer Don S. Shoemaker. The rectangular tray's parquetry is composed by a trompe l'œil design of cubes and two flat handles. The tray shows an important fragment of its original Señal S.A. sticker. Don S. Shoemaker (1917 - 1990) is one of the most important representatives of modern design in Mexico. Born in Nebraska, he studied at the Art Institute of Chicago in the 1930's. After being part of World War II, he settled in Santa María de Guido, a town near the city of Morelia, where he would live for the rest of his days. The artisan wealth of the Morelia region prompted him to found Señal, S.A., a furniture and accessories factory which used tropical woods such as cuéramo, cocobolo, granadillo and mahogany. Its furniture was part of various government offices and was exported in large quantities to the North American market.
