A stunning papier mache tray from England, 19th century, with “Japanned” black lacquer and parcel gilt illustrations covering the surface. The tray is glowing from the intricate depictions of stylized cranes, willow trees, and other flowering vines against the black-lacquered background (faintly textured by craquelure patina) extending to the edge of the rim.
